Jesus said a few times during his teachings that anyone with ears (plural) should listen and understand. I used to think that he said this to emphasize the importance of listening to whatever he was saying at the time, but a greater mystery is hidden here. In the book of Revelation, Jesus changes the phrase to, “Anyone with an ear” (singular) when he speaks to the seven churches. There is reason for the change, which we will explore below.
Also, in Jonah 4:11 the importance of knowing the difference between the right and the left is made very clear when God says, “And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand (120,000) persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand…?”
Now it’s pretty clear that all these people weren’t dyslexic and just too uneducated to know which hand was right and which was left on their physical bodies. So let’s look closer at the right and the left and how it relates to the two worlds (material and spiritual) that we are all so intricately intertwined with. This feeling that we are often being pulled in two different directions is why we are often depicted as having a little imaginary devil on the left shoulder and a little imaginary angel on the right.
Before continuing, you may find it very interesting to know that our common use of the word left comes from the Latin word meaning “sinister.”
Bear with me here for a moment if you will and ask yourself, “What is a thought?” Is it stored in the brain? Is it made of matter? If the answer is yes to these questions, that would mean the brain is like a hard drive on a computer and that all thoughts are stored there forever. This would mean that one day science will be able to hook a cable to a deceased person’s brain and download every single thought stored there. But even if that were the case, what about the wisdom we gain from experience, the comprehension that’s gained from the thoughts and images that we have? Could that ever be stored in anything of this material world? Let’s look closer at what a thought is, and I know this is different from what many have been taught.
Thoughts are considered to be spirits. Well, maybe that’s not a good way to describe it. Actually, the “spirit” is what causes the thought. Spirits also produce images and voices in the mind. When someone speaks a word to you in this world, the voice travels over sound waves and into the ear, where it is processed by the mind and then sent to the soul, where a spirit is then created. This is why we are told by John to “test the spirits.” This is why the tongue is a fire. Words spoken become living “spirits” or “messengers” of truth or lies.
Thoughts do not reside anywhere in this physical universe and they do not reside in the brain. The brain is an intricate control center that is used to process and interpret information for the mind. These thoughts resides in another dimension. So do you see how close we really are to the spirit realm? It’s as if we have one foot (the left) in this world and another foot (the right) in the spirit realm.
For the most part, when the Bible uses the word “left” to describe the left side of the body, it refers to this material world and to things that are not spiritual in nature. On the flip side of the coin, the right is used to describe the spiritual aspect of things and those who are spiritually awakened or enlightened.
Below are some examples that are quoted from the King James Version
Exodus 29:20 Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.
Notice how specific this verse is. This verse is not speaking of something that was literal. I mean just how foolish would this look if it were, and why would God command such a thing? There’s nothing to be had by this being literal. This is a representation of Aaron and his sons begin anointed with spiritual understanding and guidance.
Matthew 25:31-34 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
The goat has always been represented as kind of an ignorant or rebellious animal and it relates to sins (the scapegoat). When the son of man returns, which is the awakening of the true self from its long line of sleep, then these things will begin to be cast out of the soul. Sheep are the meekest of animals and stand for wholesome and spiritual understanding. They know the voice of their true master. These are the qualities that are to remain on ones quest to being perfected in love.
Matthew 6:2-4 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
This one is kind of obvious. When you do something from your heart (the right) let it be from your heart. Do not go and make it be known what you did to others and the world (the left) in order that you may receive self glory.
John 21:3-6 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
A lot of people have a problem with this one because this is one they have been taught is a legitimate Christ miracle, but there is nothing to be gained from the literal rendering and everything to be had from the spiritual one. Some of the symbols here are the shore, the ship, the great sea, the net, the fish, meat, the night, the morning, and the right side of the ship.
Fish reside in the sea and they represent a few things, but here they represent food for the soul, which Jesus calls “meat.” The disciples were fishing at “night” and were in darkness because they were understanding as the rest of the world, with the carnal mind. Jesus is saying here (in the morning when the light begins to shine) that they should search for the spiritual esoteric meanings of the things he had taught, such as the parables. This is the meaning of casting the net off the right side of the boat. When the the truth is comprehended from the spiritual teachings, it will never be lost again, and thus the net will not break, no matter how great a man’s catch may be.
As a further note about the “meat” referred to above by Jesus, most translations change this to the word “food,” which does not lead the mind to other scriptures which should aid in spiritual understanding. In Hebrews the writer clearly compares “meat” to a deeper understanding of the scriptures. Hebrews 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
John 18:10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear.”
Before I took this site down in order to redo it, I had an article that went into detail about this particular miracle, and it was the most viewed and most criticized article on the site. I received some hate mail over it. But remember, we are looking for the spiritual meanings to see how they affect the soul and our own journey. To cut off the right ear with the sword is to be dishonest or hide the truth. In other words, Peter lied and Jesus healed the right ear by telling the truth, revealing that he was the Christ they were looking for. If Peter does represent the boisterous ego nature of the soul, then this also fits well because the ego never wants to give up to the Christ nature.
So after all that is said, we can go back to the opening paragraph and know that if we must have a good left ear to hear the audible words of Jesus that are spoken, and a good right ear to process the spiritual truth of what has been heard, then what ear should we suppose Jesus was referring to when he now says in Revelation, “Anyone with an ear…”? Of course, it’s the right ear, because Revelation cannot be understood by the carnal mind. With Revelation, the left ear just gets in the way. The words themselves, with no previous esoteric understanding of the scriptures have confused the entire church (Babylon the Great).
However, languages were confused in Genesis when they tried to build the tower to heaven (gain it all without any inner contemplation, meditation, what have you), all for the purposes of using for their own power. But the tongues were given to the disciples of Christ (of which you are if you understand and have the one ingredient needed), and as we proceed our journey through the Bible, we begin to understand the “tongues” this book was written in. Remember though, tongues…or just because you may “mentally” understand, is the LEAST of spiritual gifts. LOVE is the first…and the ingredient spoken of above to make your way through the battle of Armageddon upon your very soul in Revelation.
As it turns out, the elite organizations of ages past are not the only ones with secret symbols. The Bible writers understood the kingdom and they hid the truth with a much more powerful veil. The right ear is one of spiritual discernment. The right hand is where one’s spiritual treasure (if any) is kept, and it is indicative of one’s spiritual kingdom power (it is not visible). Jesus healed the withered right hand! But more importantly, the one who is awakening to the Christ nature within does indeed sit at the right hand of God, exercising the Father’s will and demonstrating His love on earth.
